Marden Cricket Club recently hosted a celebration of cricket, raising funds for villagecharities and showcasing junior talent along the way.
Sunday 7th July saw the finalsof the Weald of Kent League KWIK Cricket with no less than 19 teams of eager Under 9 boys and girls taking part from various clubs. Well over 160 youngsters participated from Marden, Lenham, Mote, Bearsted, Headcorn Linton Park, Leeds & Broomfield, Town Malling, Staplehurst and Sissinghurst who were the winners on the day.
The festival continued in the afternoon with Marden’s 20th annual Saints v Sinners match. This long-established Marden village fixture, originally church-goers taking on the pub-goers, is always played in good spirit with funds raised for the church and local history group. This time the Sinners won in a nail biting finish to balance the series 10:10.
Marden’s Festival of Cricket was staged in association with BTF, the cricket club’s sponsor. Richard Thomas of BTF commented “This kind of grass roots cricket is what BTF aims to nurture. The depth of junior cricket at Marden, matched with their facilities, is something to behold and this was a great occasion for Kent junior cricket with no shortage of entertainment all day!”
Commented Andy Puncher, Marden Cricket Club chairman, “As ever, this was a great day for cricket and Marden Cricket Club. All players from all teams contributed to a fantastic celebration of cricket and we were delighted to host these events on this spectacular ground while raising money for our local causes”
