Water Environment Grant

Scheme released on 20th March 2018 to provide funding to improve the water environment including:

  • Rivers and estuaries

  • Lakes

  • Canals

  • Wetlands

  • Groundwaters

  • Coastal waters

Open to applications from 20th March 2018 to 11 May 2018.

A competitive scheme with proposals needing to match with:

  • River Basin Management Plans that protect inland surface waters, estuaries, coastal waters and ground waters.

  • Sites designated to protect their water habitat.

  • Water bodies on the Catchment Data Explorer database

  • Designated sites on the Magic Map system

Can be used to fund:

  • Creation or restoration of water habitats like watercourses, lakes or wetlands.

  • Restore ecosystems in water dependent habitats.

  • Remove barriers to fish movement.

  • Construct fish bypass channels or restore fish migration.

  • Manage sources of water pollution – especially diffuse pollution.

  • Remove or reduce non-native species in a habitat.

  • Support activities or events that help change agricultural practice to improve the water environment.

  • Carry out feasibility studies for activities to tackle environmental problems.

  • Buying machinery or equipment to carry out any of the above activities.

It could pay for up to 15% towards:

  • Project management salary costs

  • Rent of site offices and compound facilities.

  • Communication and postage costs.

The project can last more than a year but must begin before March 2019 and end by March 2021 and can receive a maximum grand of £2 million.
